ST1 to ST5 = 20-25 trainees

ST1 rotations:

Based at Southampton General Hospital

ST2-5 rotations:

Trainees rotate between the following participating training centres on a yearly basis:

  • Southampton General Hospital, Southampton
  • Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth
  • Salisbury District Hospital, Salisbury
  • Poole Hospital, Poole
  • St Richards Hospital, Chichester

The rotations are decided taking into account training needs of the individual trainee. Trainees will generally spend 2-3 years in Southampton and 2-3 years within the district general hospitals in the programme.

Training programme for ST1’s:

In addition to a model of clinical apprenticeship training, there are opportunities to participate in the departmental teaching activities, including:

  • Seminars on basic Histopathology over a multi-headed microscope with a consultant
  • A “blackbox” session on current and difficult cases in Surgical Pathology, held weekly
  • Cellular Pathology Course, held fortnightly during term time
  • Annual audit presentation meeting

ST1s also have the opportunity to attend three block-teaching weeks during the first year. One of these teaching weeks is held in Southampton (November) and the other two in Bristol (September) and Oxford/Wycombe (February).

Trainees are also encouraged to attend national meetings and courses organised by the Royal College of Pathologists and other organisations such as the Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland.
